Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is a Kenyan politician who served as the President of the Republic of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. Uhuru served as the member of parliament (MP) for Gatundu South from 2002 to 2013. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister to Raila Odinga from 2008 to 2013. Uhuru was previously associated with the Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) before founding The National Alliance (TNA), one of the allied parties that campaigned for his election during the 2013 general elections.
He later on went to form a merger with the United Republican Party (URP) led by William Ruto to form the Jubilee Party. Uhuru was re-elected for a second and final term in the August 2017 general elections. However, Uhuru’s election was challenged in the Supreme Court of Kenya by his main competitor, Raila Odinga. On 1 September 2017, the court declared the election invalid and ordered a new presidential election to take place within 60 days from the day of the ruling.
The nullification of the Kenya’s presidential election, became the first in Africa and the fourth in the world. A new presidential election was held on 26 October, which he won, after Raila Odinga boycotted the election. Uhuru is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first president, and his fourth wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta. He’s married to Margaret Gakuo Kenyatta and together they have three children: his two sons Jomo and Muhoho, and his daughter Ngina.
