The United States Marine Corps (USMC), also referred to as the United States Marines or U.S. Marines, is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations with the United States Navy as well as the Army and Air Force. The U.S. Marine Corps is one of the four armed service branches and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The Marine Corps is part of the Department of Defense (DOD).
It provides land combat, sea-based, and air-ground operations support for the other branches during a mission. This branch also guards U.S. embassies around the world and the classified documents in those buildings. Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) members are known as Raiders. All service members are referred to as Marines. The reserve component is Marine Corps Reserve.
Requirements to join the United States Marine Corps (USMC)
Candidates wishing to join the United States Marine Corps (USMC) must meet the following requirements.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
- Must be between 17 to 28 (17-year old recruits require parental consent).
- Have no more than two dependents.
- Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test (minimum AFQT score: 32).
- Must be a high school graduate, have earned a GED or have met other high school equivalency requirements.
- Background check (security and financial checks) must be passed.
- You must be in good physical condition. You will be physically trained at basic training, but you will have to pass a physical prior to enlistment.
- Must be in good health. Some diseases or conditions that are life threatening or contagious may disqualify you from the service.
- You must pass a criminal background check and have no felony convictions.
- Women are eligible to enlist in all occupational exception of combat arms specialties: infantry, tank and amphibian tractor crew.
