The Kenya Prisons Service is a department in the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government. The prison system was first introduced by the British East Africa protectorate with the enactment of East Africa Prisons Regulations in April, 1902. The service contributes to public safety and security by ensuring there is safe custody of all persons who are lawfully committed to prison facilities, as well as facilitating the rehabilitation of custodial sentenced offenders for community reintegration.
In order to join the Kenya Prisons Service, one is expected to fulfill the following requirements.
- Must be a Kenyan citizen with a National ID.
- The applicant must have no criminal record.
- Possess a KCSE certificate with at least a mean of D+.
- Age – between 18 and 28 years for diploma holders and up to 30 years for degree holders.
- Must be both physically and mentally fit.
- Must have a clear vision and good hearing.
- Height
- Men – 5 feet and 4 inches.
- Women – 5 feet and 2 inches.
- Female candidates must not be pregnant during recruitment and training period.
