Kenya Power allows you to monitor and control your electricity consumption with prepaid tokens. This has seen the removal of paper bills, long queues at KPLC offices, disconnections and hassles of re-connections. You can now buy Kenya Power tokens from the convenience of your home using your mobile phone or go to the bank or authorized vendor.
KPLC token rates
Here are the KPLC token rates.
- A monthly fixed charge of Ksh 120.
- Energy charges of:
- Ksh 2.00 per Unit for 0 – 50 Units bought (Domestic consumers).
- Ksh 8.10 per Unit for 51 – 1,500 Units bought (Domestic consumers).
- Ksh 18.57 per Unit for Units bought above 1,500 (Domestic consumers).
- Ksh 8.96 per unit for all units consumed (Small commercial consumers).
Note: Unit stands for Kilowatt-Hour (kWh).
Tax and levies
The customer shall pay any taxes, levies or duties imposed from time to time by the government. At present, the following are levied by the government:
- VAT* at 16% charged to:
- Fixed charge.
- Demand charge (not applicable to domestic customers).
- Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment.
- Fuel cost.
- Inflation adjustment.
- Taxable value of electrical energy consumed in a manner required by the government.
- Rural Electrification Programme (REP) levy at 5% of revenue from Unit sales.
- Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) levy at 3 Kenya cents/kWh.
VAT on supply of electrical energy to a domestic household where the consumption does not exceed two hundred kilowatt-hours (units) is exempted.
How to buy KPLC tokens via M-Pesa
To buy KPLC tokens using Mpesa follow these steps.
a. SIM Toolkit
- Go to Mpesa menu select “Pay Bill”.
- Enter the Kenya Power prepaid business number 888880 and press “OK”.
- Enter your 11-digit prepaid meter number that you would like to purchase tokens for, as the account number and press “OK”.
- Enter the amount you wish to purchase tokens for (between KSh 100 and Ksh 35,000) and press “OK”.
- Enter your Mpesa PIN and press “OK”.
- Confirm that all the details are correct and press “OK”.
- You will receive a confirmation SMS from Mpesa immediately.
- Kenya Power will then generate a KPLC token number for your meter and send it to you via SMS.
b. MySafaricom app
- Open MySafaricom app
- If you don’t have the app, download it from Play Store or App Store.
- Once you have downloaded it, open the app and enter your phone number to generate a One Time Password (OTP) that will be sent as an SMS and you will use to log into the app.
- Tap “M-Pesa”.
- Select “Bill Manager”.
- Choose “Popular”.
- Select “KPLC Prepaid”.
- Enter your 11-digit prepaid meter number that you would like to purchase tokens for, as the account number.
- Enter the amount you wish to purchase tokens for (between Ksh 100 and Ksh 35,000) and press “Pay”.
- Tap “Continue”.
- Enter your Mpesa PIN and press “OK”.
- You will receive a confirmation SMS from Mpesa.
- Kenya Power will then generate a KPLC token number for your meter and send it to you via SMS.
How to buy KPLC tokens via Airtel Money
To buy KPLC tokens using Airtel Money follow these steps.
- Go to Airtel menu.
- Choose “Money” option.
- Choose the ‘Nickname’ option and enter “MYPOWER”.
- Enter amount.
- Confirm transaction.
- Enter the 4-digit password.
- Under reference option enter the full Kenya Power prepaid 11-digit meter number.
- You will receive a confirmation SMS from AIRTEL MONEY immediately.
- Kenya Power will then generate a KPLC token number for your meter and send it to you via SMS.
How to buy KPLC tokens via Equitel
To buy KPLC tokens using Equitel Money follow these steps.
- From Equitel menu, select “Eazzy Pay”.
- Select “Pay Bill”.
- Choose the bank account number to pay from.
- Select business number “KPLC Tokens”.
- Enter your 11-digit prepaid meter number that you would like to purchase tokens for, and press “OK”.
- Enter the amount you wish to purchase tokens for (between Ksh 100 and Ksh 500,000).
- Enter your Equitel PIN and press “OK”.
- Confirm that all details are correct by pressing “OK”.
- You will receive a text confirmation of the transaction from Equity Bank.
- Kenya Power will then generate a KPLC token number for your meter and send it to you via SMS.
