WhatsApp does not provide means by which a person can send a message (start a chat) with unsaved number directly from the app. Users are therefore forced to save a number first to their contact list before initiating a chat. But, there’s a way for a user to send a message to unsaved number without involving a third-party app, which may be harmful to your privacy.
How to start a WhatsApp chat with unsaved number
WhatsApp’s click to chat feature allows you to begin a chat with someone without having their phone number saved in your phone’s address book. As long as you know this person’s phone number and they have an active WhatsApp account, you can create a link that will allow you to start a chat with them. By clicking the link, a chat with the person automatically opens. Click to chat works on both your phone and WhatsApp web.
- Open Chrome or Firefox or Safari browser.
- On the address bar, key in the url https://wa.me/<number> where <number> is a full phone number in international format (with the country and region code). Omit any zeroes, brackets, dashes, or plus sign when adding the phone number in international format.
- For instance, use https://wa.me/15551234567, and NOT https://wa.me/+001-(555)1234567
- Once the link opens, you will see a green “Message” icon. Tapping on it opens a conversation with that phone number in your WhatsApp.
