1. Back to the Future (1985)
The original Back to the Future movie starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly has stood the test of time. Perhaps it helps that it is deliberately set at certain points in time, so that way it never feels dated. But the themes it explores are universal, and the jokes still make sense to modern sensibilities.
In case you haven’t seen it, Christopher Lloyd plays a mad scientist who invents a time machine. His young friend McFly accidentally uses it to travel back in time to when his parents met in high school. He must find Lloyd’s character in the past and convince him to help him return to the future, and not make any changes to the past in the process.
2. Batman: The Dark Knight (2008)
This might be the best of the modern Batman movies, with Christian Bale as the caped crusader, and Heath Ledger providing a startling performance as the Joker. The mix of action and dark themes about humanity are compelling viewing. And the powerhouse performances given by all the lead mean that you can watch it again and again. Not seen it? Batman faces his most challenging enemy. How do you outwit someone whose only desire is to create chaos?
3. Gladiator (2000)
Maximus! Maximus! Maximus! Russell Crowe, in his physical peak, stars as the Roman general brought low by political intrigue and forced to fight as a gladiator. He must fight for his life, his self-respect, and to save the city that he loves, Rome, from the clutches of Commodus, expertly played by Joaquin Phoenix in a role that foreshadows his epic turn as the Joker. Plus there are lots of awesome fight scenes and blood and gore to keep audiences happy.
4. Inception (2010)
This movie features a group of thieves who steal secrets by entering the minds of others through their dreams. But the dream world has many levels, and it is easy to lose yourself. This mind-bending film has so many hidden Easter eggs that you can discover something new every time you watch it, and still have questions after the tenth viewing. Leonardo DiCaprio leads an impressive cast that also includes Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marion Cotillard.
5. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Arguably the best of the Indiana Jones Movies, though those who support the original Raiders of the Lost Ark film also have a case (and it is also available on Netflix). Harrison Ford returns as the swashbuckling archaeologist Indiana Jones, and this time he is joined on screen by the incredible Sean Connery as his father. They are on the trail of the holy grail, trying to get their hands on the holy relic before it can be found and exploited by evil Nazis.
6. Inglorious Basterds (2009)
Indiana Jones isn’t the only hero to take on the Nazis. Quentin Tarrantino turns his attention to them as well in this blood piece of cinema. He follows a group of American soldiers and a long French Jewish girl looking to take down the evil regime. But they are thwarted at every turn by the SS Officer Hand Landa, played perfectly by Christoph Waltz. There is over-the-top gore and off-color jokes filling all 153 minutes of this film.
7. The Matrix (1999)
Before there was Inception, there was The Matrix, the film that introduced us to the idea of worlds within worlds and left us questioning how much we really know about reality Keanu Reeves stars as Neo, an ordinary guy, but one with questions. Soon his questioning leaves him to discover that he is not really living in the real world, but a computer-generated one. This knowledge gives him the ability to do incredible things, and gives us some incredible action scenes.
8. Mean Girls (2004)
This film written by Tina Fey is one of the most quotable films of recent years. It is worth watching just to remind yourself where all those references come from. Lindsay Lohan stars as a girl that has been homeschooled for years who then arrives in a normal school. She immediately meets the cool girls, and finds herself working to be accepted by them. But she soon takes things too far and loses herself to the image. Rachel McAdams steals the show as reigning mean girl Regina George.
9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
This animated feature-length spiderman flick is the kind you can watch again and again, because it has so many different imaginings of our masked hero. A series of events sees a new spiderman joining forces with a range of different spidermans from parallel universes, including female spidemans and spiderman noir voiced by Nicolas Cage. It is one of the best re-imagings of the comic favorite.
10. Superbad (2007)
The episodic nature of the scenes in this film means that it is the kind of thing that you can tune in and out of without feeling like you are missing anything. Produced by Judd Apatow, written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, the film stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as a pair of high school misfits out to try and have some fun. It feels a bit like a more down-to-earth version of The Hangover. Watch out for fan-favorite McLovin.
