How to mute and unmute people on Instagram

On Instagram you have the option to mute someone’s posts or stories from showing up on your feed. Muting comes in handy when you don’t want to unfollow someone, but also don’t want to see their content. Instagram won’t let them know you muted them. Muting is different from unfollowing or blocking people. You will still continue following them and seeing each other’s content, only that their content won’t appear on your feed. If in future you change your mind and you want their content to appear on your feed, you have the option of unmuting them.

How to mute someone on Instagram

If you don’t want to see someone’s posts or stories in your feed, you can mute them.

1. Open Instagram app.
2. Go to their profile by tapping magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen in the app.
3. Type their name into the search at the top and select their profile when it appears.
4. Tap “Following” below their profile info.
5. Tap “Mute”.
6. Toggle the slider to the right next to “Posts” or “Stories” or both. When the slider turns blue, you’ve muted their content.

How to mute someone’s posts on Instagram

If you don’t want to see someone’s posts in your feed, you can mute them. Muting someone’s posts is different from unfollowing them and from muting their stories.

1. Open Instagram app.
2. Once you’ve located a post on your feed by the person that you’d like to mute, tap the three dots to the right of their username.
3. A list of options will pop-up. Tap “Mute”.
4. You’ll then be able to mute either their posts or both their posts and stories. Tap your preferred option.

How to mute someone’s stories on Instagram

If you don’t want someone’s story to appear in the bar at the top of feed, you can mute their story. Muting someone’s story is different from unfollowing them and from muting their profile. You’ll still see their posts in feed.

1. Open the Instagram app.
2. At the top of feed, tap and hold the profile picture of the person whose story you’d like to mute.
3. Select “Mute”.
4. You’ll then be able to mute either their stories or both their stories and posts. Tap your preferred option.

How to unmute someone on Instagram

If you want to see someone’s posts or stories again in your feed, you can unmute them.

1. Open Instagram app.
2. Go to your profile.
3. Tap the three bars on the top right.
4. Tap Settings > Privacy > Muted Accounts.
5. Tap on the person you want to unmute.
6. Tap “Following” below their profile info.
7. Tap “Mute”.
8. Toggle the slider next to “Posts” or “Stories” to the left. When the slider turns white, you’ve unmuted their content.
